Hair Loss – The Follicle Facts

Anyone ~ men, women and children ~ can experience hair loss. It may start with you noticing a few extra hairs on your pillow, in your brush or comb. It’s normal to shed some hair each day as part of a natural cycle. But... then you realize there’s a general thinning trend and it’s not growing back!

At any one time, about 10 percent of the hair on your scalp is in a resting phase. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place. This growing phase lasts for 2 to 6 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time.

What causes excessive hair loss?

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness, radical stress or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and should only be temporary.

What if I haven't suffered stress or trauma though?

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss as well. If your thyroid gland is over-active or under-active, your hair may fall out. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment of the thyroid disease. Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may help.

The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. Pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia),is the most common type of alopecia and affects roughly one-third of men and women. It's typically permanent. Another type of alopecia, (alopecia areata), can be temporary. It can involve hair loss on your scalp or other parts of your body.

Is there any treatment for hair loss?

Depending on what's causing your hair to fall out or not replace itself normally, there are some treatments available! Remember, always consult a doctor. Some treatments could simply involve changing a medicine or correcting a hormone imbalance.

The following treatments represent the only FDA approved or clinically backed treatments at this time for hair loss. Brand names “Propecia” and “Rogaine” (listed below) are the only products on the market that have been clinically proven to work in treating hair loss in men and women.

Brand: Propecia - for men only
Clinically proven in several studies to be 83% effective at maintaining hair and 62% effective at re-growing it after 2 yrs of use. This is likely the best long-term treatment available. It is also good for new hair loss sufferers wishing to stop their loss. It can be used with Rogaine to re-grow larger amounts of hair.

Brand: Rogaine - for men or women
Comes in 2% and 5% strength and must be applied twice a day. It is mainly used for stimulating new growth. It works well alone and even better for men who use it with Propecia or for women who use it with Tricomin.

Brand: Tricomin - for men or women
This is a topical spray, also used as a growth stimulant and works well in addition to any Propecia/Rogaine regimen for men, or Rogaine regimen for women. There have been some good studies backing Tricomin, which shortens the resting phase of follicles.

Brand: Nizoral - for men or women
Nizoral is a truly positive and some feel, a necessary addition to every regimen. It can usually be found in the drug store or grocery store shampoo aisle. It maintains scalp health, helps to reduce inflammation and itching which can destroy the effectiveness of Propecia and other treatments. Use it once every 3 days in rotation with your normal shampoo.

Always take care of the hair you have! If your hair is thinning, get rid of metal combs and brushes as well as fine combs and sharp-tooth combs. Exposure to sun, wind or swimming pool chemicals will dry out your scalp and hair. Certain styles and treatments can also cause breakage or root damage. it's important to know how to care for your skin, scalp and hair types!
